Scores of senior citizens from across the western region turned-up at the ENRH Physiotherapy Unit to partake in activities slated to mark this year’s World Physio Day.
This year’s global theme ‘the role of physiotherapy in preventing frailty and falls’ focuses on how physiotherapy and physical activities are crucial for helping older adults maintain their strength, balance and overall independence.
This year’s celebration was held on two days. First, on Saturday 6th September, a short walk from the forecourt of the Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery Training College to Adiembra Junction and back followed by dance aerobics. This was targeted at hospital staff and community members.
The participants were refreshed with fresh coconuts.
This all was made possible by the Physiotherapy Unit and the hospital’s occupational health team together with Legends Hub a capacity building set-up focused on brainstorming, ideation, incubation and acceleration of ideas for entrepreneurs and social impact makers.
On the actual day for the celebration which was 8th September, the team organized free consultation and treatment for the elderly. The target group was older adults, retirees and pensioner groups. Participants had their blood pressure, glucose and body mass index monitored.
They were also taken through flexibility, endurance, 3 meter walk fitness tests as well as counselling and consultation.
The Physio unit was lit with an atmosphere of friendliness. Subtle music was beaming in the background to entertain the participants.
